Education in Papua New Guinea is an important part of the country's development. It is one of the few countries in the world where the education system is still largely based on traditional methods. The majority of schools in the country are still run by local village leaders, with a few larger schools run by the government. Education is free and compulsory for children between the ages of 6 and 14.

The government of Papua New Guinea recognizes the importance of education and has made efforts to improve the quality of education. This has included establishing the National Education Policy in 2011 which outlines specific goals for the education sector. The policy aims to improve access to education, increase the quality of teaching, and make sure that the curriculum is relevant to the needs of the country. It also encourages the use of technology in education, and provides funding for teacher training.

The literacy rate in Papua New Guinea is still very low, with only around 46% of the population being able to read and write. This is mainly due to the lack of access to education in rural areas and the high cost of school fees. The government is working to improve access to education, and the number of students in school is gradually increasing.
